I'm an alcoholic, although I quit about 10 years ago, and hated to do it. I loved to drink, but now that I don't there's no missing involved. The two best things I have ever done are 1) quitting smoking, and 2) quitting drinking. Brilliant article, Ben, and an important one.
Cigarettes or weed? Weed’s my big vice as a substance. I’m thankful it was never more harmful things, but I can certainly relate to the addictive personality struggle. Thanks so much for reading, Mike!
Regular pot smokers play down the impact on their lives, thinking no harm is being done. Again, not talking about occasional use. I have several close friends who smoke when they awake and smoke all day. I can't believe they've never been busted by the police for driving and smoking. Sadly, they really don't get high anymore (built-up tolerance), and much money is wasted. I am lucky not to be addictive in nature...
I see this too, one problem with this is the idea of moderation. Some people just don’t have the capacity to moderate. Their brains are not wired like that. It can be acgenetic thing. So your skill (stopping in time) is not a skill everybody has. It’s not a matter of the right mentality. fun fact: alcohol is considered more addictive than coke (Dutch drug council concluded). Something to think about: why we forbid one and promote the other thing. It’s arbitrary.
I couldn’t agree more. It never fails to baffle me how it could have just as easily been a thousand other drugs to become popular in this way. Alcohol really just was around at the right place and time. Hard to imagine where we’d be as a species if it hadn’t been. Thanks for reading, Maarten!
Interesting article. Yes, alcohol is a problem for many. Both my sister and brother had to 'dry out' from addiction. However, I enjoy beer frequently, have never vomited from consumption, never drank more than 5 (and nearly always much less). Most people I happen to know are moderate drinkers.
It is sad when I do observe drunk people, and people in a bar having one more after saying they were going home. So, overconsumption is definitely a big issue for many, but for the majority it's just a matter of being more mature in our choices...
I’m the same way. Even with an addictive personality myself, i never pushed myself to the point of throwing up with alcohol. I’ve always known my limits. It’s a shame how few people have that restraint, but I can’t pretend I don’t understand. Thanks for reading, Tony!

Cigarettes. I don't smoke weed, but I do enjoy the occasional edible.

Moderation in all things?!?
I learnt in high school chemistry that alcohol can be a solution.
Really not a great thing to put in the body 😂
