I was about the same age as Lloyd when that film came out. Jack reminds me of my dad. That film reminds me of my childhood. I laugh all the way through.
I have to disagree with you on this one, Ben. I'm a Stephen King fan, and I when The Shining was released I couldn't wait to buy my popcorn. Unfortunately, I had read King's book, not once but twice. It was a book about the supernatural. The movie was not. It was about madness and mayhem in the person of Jack Nicholson, not about ghosts, ghouls and a haunted hotel. I wasn't surprised when King sued the production for being radically unfaithful to the book. Kubrick was said to have said he wasn't into that horror nonsense, and I wasn't into that movie. Had I not read the book, perhaps it would have been a different story. Finally, as a result of Kubrick's disastrous rendering of the novel, King insisted on reading all the scripts moving forward, and even playing a cameo role in some of them.
Did King actually get as far as suing? I knew he was initially displeased! But I think I recall reading that over the years he's grown to appreciate it as a movie in its own right, even if not his story exactly. Did you prefer Doctor Sleep? I've heard it was more faithful. I never actually read either, so it's only the cinematic experience I can go off of for either. For someone who loves his movies, I'm ashamed at how little of his work I've still read.
So The Shining was never able to grow on you at all? I still think of it as one of the best, most atmospheric horrors of all.
My apologies. I meant to say it did grow on me when viewed as a "movie in my own right." I did prefer Doctor Sleep because it speaks to the supernatural.

Was it a less than happy childhood? Hahahah. Not the best movie to have make you reflect back on the early days!
So that one doesn't scare you much? There's definitley a humor to jack, but I don't do a whole lot of laughing during that movie 😂
That car scene with the discussion about cannibalism reminds me of every family trip. ;)
😂😂 okay you know what, that's fair hahaha. I totally relate to that part. Such a great opening scene.

Thanks as always for reading, Mike!
